Many
people are surprised that acupuncture can be performed on animals. Pets
will generally accept acupuncture very well and rarely require
sedation.
Acupuncture is particuarly effective in treating chronic pain conditions such as arthritis and back pain. Acute muscle and ligament strains can also be treated. It can also be an effective treatment in non painful conditions such as allergies, wound healing and stress related disorders such as cystitis and over grooming in cats.
The usual course of treatment is once a week for four weeks. A session typically lasts 30-40 mintues and 80% of pets will respond to acupuncture by the fourth treatment.
Catriona McHardy BVMS MRCVS has been trained in the western scientific approach to acupuncture and is a member of the Association of British Veterinary Acupuncturists which is affiliated to the British Small Animal Veterinary Association.
